The Cabinet will today sign off on the date for the referendum on the European fiscal compact.
Ministers are expected to settle on a date in either late May or early June.
The treaty comes into force on January 1 next if 12 or more countries ratify it.
Health Minister Dr James Reilly said the referendum should be held as quickly as possible.
"I don't think we want to see any undue delay," the Minister said.
"The Cabinet will make its determination and I will encourage as high a turnout as possible.
"This is about the future of our country and it's a statement about where we see ourselves in Europe."
