Boyd Barrett: Government 'shaking in their boots' after water charge protest

The organisers of the weekend demonstration against water charges says it has rattled the Government.

Tens of thousands of people took part in the march through Dublin city centre on Saturday.

More protests are planned to take place around the country on November 1 - as part of the campaign of opposition.

People Before Profit TD Richard Boyd Barrett says the reports that exemptions and reliefs will be announced in tomorrow's Budget - show the Government is backpedalling.

"I think the Government are absolutely shaking in their boots after what happened at the weekend - the massive mobilisation we saw on the streets of Dublin and the impact of two by-elections," he said.

"So I think they are very seriously rattled, and they're backpedalling, but they're not backpedalling enough.

"What people out on the streets are saying is: 'We want water charges abolished'."
