Birth certs 'to require identity of father'

The Minister for Social Protection, Joan Burton has confirmed that birth certs will soon have to include the identity of the father.

Minister Burton says she plans to implement the recommendation of the Law Reform Commission in relation to civil registration and to start that process by the end of the year.

It is hoped compulsory joint registration of birth will facilitate requiring a father to take responsibility for the maintenance of the child and related rights in respect of guardianship
