Irish beekeepers are to get €150,000 in EU funding, it was announced today.
Combined with a matching grant from the Government this means the operators of the country's 24,000 beehives will get an extra €300,000 between 2011 and 2013.
The fund recognises the key importance of bees for pollinating agricultural and food crops.
"Without bees, many crops simply cannot reproduce," a European Commission statement said.
"Recently, there has been an unprecedented collapse of bee colonies in many countries and today's announcement of Commission extra funding to the sector recognises this."
