Baxter to shed jobs in Castlebar; Swinford jobs to continue

Baxter Healthcare is to shed 110 jobs in Castlebar, Co Mayo.

The redundancies will be on a voluntary basis.

The company says only its operations in Castlebar will be affected and the Swinford plant will continue as normal.

Local Fine Gael Councillor Ger Deere has told Midwest News that it's a blow for workers.

He said: "It's not good news at all coming up to Christmas for the staff out there in Baxter, our thoughts are with them at the moment.

"Baxter are a very strong company, very committed to Castlebar, so let's hope that all assistance will be given to the people that might be looking for voluntary redundancies, and whatever assistance can be given, should be given."
