Almost 150 minors travelled to UK for abortion last year

A total of 148 Irish girls aged 17 or under travelled to the UK last year for an abortion, new figures have revealed.

Of that, 37 were aged 16 years or under.

Figures released in the UK today show a total of 4,149 Irish women went there in 2011 for an abortion, down from 4,402 in 2010.

The overall figure has been in decline since 2001, when 6,673 women gave Irish addresses at UK abortion clinics.

The biggest category of Irish women seeking abortions in Britain was in the 20-24 age group.
