Abortion legislation yet to be commenced
Health Minister James Reilly

The Minister for Health has yet to sign the order giving effect to the Protection of Life during Pregnancy Act, it has emerged.

The act - which allows for legal terminations in limited circumstances in Ireland - was passed by the Oireachtas in July.

The bill was signed into law by the President in July, after he consulted the Council of State on its constitutionality.

However it is understood that the Minister has yet to sign the commencement order because provisions for specialist review panels have not yet been met.

A spokesperson for the Minister for Health has confirmed that it remains his intention to commence the legislation by the end of the year.
