New UCC Agricultural Science Degree launched

The new Agricultural Science Degree at University College Cork, delivered in collaboration with Teagasc, was launched by Agriculture Minister Michael Creed last week.

The first intake of 24 students took place in September.

Dairygold Co-op has awarded two annual undergraduate bursaries to BAgrSc students at UCC.

The two successful 2019 students are Hannah Dinan, Clarecastle, Co Clare, and Liam Wall, Crookstown, Co Cork.

The BAgrSc is a four-year full-time course.

The CAO points for entry were 473, in 2019.

The Bachelor of Agricultural Science programme focuses on practical skills, the science behind modern agriculture, and on supporting students to gain skills in farm management, business acumen and modern farm technology over their four years of study.

It will include a placement opportunity which will provide students with experience of working in modern Irish agriculture.

What is the course outline?

This programme enables students to comprehend social and economic agricultural and food developments in a global context by focussing on the functioning and operation of Irish farm-orientated systems.

There is a large emphasis on the placement module which provides students with the opportunity to apply the academic knowledge to specific work practices.

Students will learn about the application of aspects of environmental, chemical and biological sciences to the study of farmland and livestock in a sustainable practice.

They will apply scientific methods and techniques in the examination of the farmland environment and in the health and welfare of livestock, appropriate methods, and design programmes, for best agricultural practice assessment.

New UCC Agricultural Science Degree launched

UCC has a number of unique selling points regarding offering Agricultural Science.

These include its accessible and central location in the heartland of the dairy industry, its expertise in food science, plant science, and sustainability, and its collaborative relationship with Teagasc, with a particular strength being UCC’s proximity to the Moorepark Teagasc Food Research Centre.

Up to 30% of the programme will be delivered by Teagasc on-site at Moorepark, Fermoy, where students will be able to avail of specialist expertise and hands-on/practicalelements of this

programme.

The third-year placement will take place on farms mostly throughout the Munster region.

Students must be in possession of a valid driving licence prior to commencing their placement in year three of the programme.

Why choose this course?

This course is offered by UCC in partnership with Teagasc, which is Ireland’s national body providing integrated research, advisory and training services to the agriculture and food industry and rural communities.

This will ensure students get a truly applied experience of applying scientific knowledge in a practical setting.

Students will be highly employable in the agri-food sector, on completion of this programme.

Postgraduate opportunities are also possible for those wishing to pursue further studies.

What are the fees and costs?

Course fees include a tuition fee, student contribution fee and capitation fee.

The state will pay the tuition fees for EU students who are eligible under the Free Fees Scheme.

The annual student contribution and capitation fees are payable by the student.

In 2019/20, the student contribution fee is €3,000 and the capitation fee is €250.

Travel costs for day field trips and site visits will be covered but travel costs to placement sites (year three) are not covered.

For EU applicants, application to Year 1 of the degree programme is made directly through the Central Applications Office. Applicants should apply online at www.cao.ie.

The normal closing date for receipt of completed applications is February 1 of the year of entry.
