Ireland had an impressively large 2019 medal haul for our grass-fed beef

The Irish beef industry capitalised on the opportunity offered by the Dublin venue for the recent World Steak Challenge 2019.

Over 250 gold, silver and bronze awards were handed out, and 73 winners came from Ireland, plus eight from Northern Ireland.

Eighty-two gold medals have been awarded since the competition began in 2015.

And 75% of World’s Best Steak medal winners have been grain-fed, with the first grass-fed winners coming in 2018.

In that context, Ireland’s large 2019 medal haul for our grass-fed beef is even more impressive.

And the staging of the competition in Dublin was a useful shop window for our beef industry, with delegates from around the world visiting Irish farms and beef processing premises, and finding out about grass-fed beef, and Ireland’s attention to animal welfare.

The World Steak Challenge 2019 took place at the Round Room in the Mansion House, Dublin.

With more than 300 steaks entered from 25 countries,it was the biggest World Steak Challenge yet.

The high standard presented judges with quite a challenge picking their champions.

Lord Mayor of Dublin Nial Ring launched the World Steak Challenge, organised by William Reed’s GlobalMeatNews online news source for the global meat trade.

The official host partner was Bord Bia, the judging host was Fire Restaurant and Lounge, The Mansion House, Dawson St, Dublin 2, and their executive chef, Richie Wilson, was the head judge.

The official suppliers included Synergy Grill Technology, for cooking the 300 steaks; Oscar Wilde Water; and St Mel’s Brewing Company, Longford.

The team of more than 40 judges (and 14 consumer judges) judged each entry raw and then cooked, for aroma, colour, flavour and marbling.

They gave the prizes for the World’s Best Steak overall for 2019, and the Best Rib Eye, and the Best Grass Fed steak, to JN Meat International of Denmark, overall winner for the second year in a row.

The winning steak came from an Ayrshire herd reared in Finland.

“This year’s winning steak was as close to perfection as you can get, and I hope the winner returns next year in an effort to actually achieve perfection,” said chair of judges Richie Wilson.

The fat just rippled right through the cut to the point where it was just melting under the crust of the skin. What we got from it was close to foie gras, chaud froid. There was an acidic note cutting through the fat. It really was truly stunning.

JN’s export and purchasing manager, Steffen Nagel, told GlobalMeatNews that the win will help them expand sales in the US and Asia.

It was also a good night for ABP’s Cahir, Co Tipperary, division, with Ireland’s first ever category win, the Best Fillet award, for a steak from a grass-fed Angus cross reared in Co Limerick, and available under Aldi Ireland’s own-label range.

Previous overall winner Jack’s Creek, from Australia, won the overall Best Sirloin and Best Grain-Fed, along with six gold medals, three silver medals, and one bronze medal.

The medal-winning steaks were as follows (company, steak cut, grass fed or grain fed, country of origin).
