Cattle mart reports: Top grade cattle to be auctioned as Kanturk Mart is rearing to raise funds for Rickie

Fellows at this time of the year can often be found complaining that they have the world of trouble to contend with, writes Denis Lehane.

Take beef farming for example. There’s the business of dealing with the bank and securing the funds to embark on a new year of cattle trading. Then there’s the silage, and concerns about having enough to see out the winter. Worries also about the cattle you have and the ones you have yet to purchase. Worries about the spring. Will it ever start? Will the rain ever stop?

And this year, of course, we have the ongoing trauma of the EU-Mercosur trade deal. Will big Phil make a big boo boo? Plenty there you might think to add a few more grey hairs to the poor old balding head. A lot to take on board. We have the world of trouble. But do we really?

These six Friesian steers were born in February and March 2017, weighed 347kg and sold for €640 at Corrin mart on Tuesday.

In July 2017, 27-year-old Rickie Healy of Ballyclough, Co Cork, was abroad, enjoying his summer holidays, when he suffered serious spinal injuries in a tragic swimming accident. Rickie is currently at the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dun Laoghaire.

While Rickie’s long term prognosis is as of yet uncertain, there will of course be significant on-going medical needs and expenses.

A few months back, The Rickie Healy Appeal was set up by Rickie’s friends and family to raise funds, to ensure Rickie gets the best treatment available to give him the best quality of life for the road ahead.

Now Kanturk Mart has come on board. Their ‘Rearing For Rickie’ event will take place in the mart on Friday, March 23. I spoke to Caroline O’Connell from Kilbrin earlier in the week. Caroline is one of the organisers of the event, and the daughter of well known mart auctioneer, Tim O’Connell.

“The idea behind ‘Rearing For Rickie’ was to approach a variety of businesses, hoping that they might sponsor the cost of purchasing a weanling. The weanling would be called after the company’s name, and kindly reared by a local farmer. All weanlings will be sold at this special auction night held at Kanturk Mart.

“The response we received by businesses and the farming community has surpassed all expectations. At the moment we have more than 50 cattle to be auctioned off. These are top class animals — including Limousin, Aberdeen Angus, Hereford and Charolais.

“On the night, there will also be a variety of other one-off auction items. 100% of the proceeds raised from the ‘Rearing For Rickie’ auction at Kanturk mart, including the weanlings, auction lots, and raffle, will go to the appeal. A fantastic night guaranteed, for a brilliant cause.”

So before we begin our round up of the marts this week, let’s stop all our moaning about troubles on the farm, and pencil Friday night, March 23, into the diary.

All interested in finding out more about the special auction at Kanturk mart can email to or call Caroline O’Connell at 086 1916117.

And so, as we begin our trawl of the marts, what better place to start but with Kanturk mart? Mart manager, Seamus O’Keeffe, was on hand to give us all the details.

“We had a big sale of cattle here on Tuesday. 520 animals were on offer, with a great demand for dry cows. Yearling Aberdeen Angus and Hereford bullocks commanded top prices, examples here being seven Herefords 361kg making €720. Six Aberdeen Angus bullocks weighing 350kg selling for €710.

“On Saturday last, here at the mart, we had a full clearance sale of 40 Friesian cows for John Magner, Bridgetown, Castletownroche. Herd average 1,400 gallons, prices averaged €1,430, with a lovely cow making €1,760.

“There was great demand on the day with buyers from Clare, Tipperary, Wexford and, of course, Cork.”
