Lena Dunham is well known for speaking out about women’s bodies and rights to choose, but even some of her fans think she went a step too far this time.
In her podcast Women Of The Hour she recently spoke about a visit she made to a Texas Planned Parenthood and spoke to young women who had experienced abortion.
She shared her regrets about how she felt at the time the need to make clear to a girl she met that she had never had one herself.
But things turned sour when she then added: “Now I can say that I still haven’t had an abortion, but I wish I had.”
It seems that she meant to highlight her keenness to be empathetic, but listeners slammed her comments as insensitive and ignorant.
"Lena Dunham wishes she could have an abortion"

Its not in my nature 2judge others 2harshly+Ive always admired Lena Dunham but I find it very hard 2respect some1 who takes abortion lightly— Toria Grace (@PiXyyRDuust) December 20, 2016
Lena Dunham's comments are insulting to every woman who has had an abortion. It's not like a purse or a pony-you dont just wish to have one— Meghan Kelly (@Meghan_it_rain) December 20, 2016
But other tweeters pointed out that the off-hand comment did not deserve quite such a heavy backlash, as the hour-long programme also invites speakers from all sides of the argument, often sharing personal stories.
The jury is still out…
