Timberlake and Elton John lined up as 'American Idol' judges

Justin Timberlake and Elton John are being lined up to replace Simon Cowell on 'American Idol'.

The pop star and the music legend are reportedly two celebrities being shortlisted for the vacancy on the reality show's judging panel, following the departure of the music mogul at the end of the latest series.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the two men are favourites of show founder Simon Fuller, who is also hoping to be rejoined on the production team by Nigel Lythgoe - who started 'Pop Idol' with Simon back in Britain in 2001.

However, it has been claimed that Nigel's return to the show could mean the current members of the judging panel - consisting of Kara DioGuardi, Randy Jackson and Ellen DeGeneres - could be completely changed.

The website claimed: "Industry rumors have been circulating for weeks that show's creator Simon Fuller and Fox are considering not just replacing Cowell, but dumping the entire judges panel."

In April, Lythgoe admitted he would scrap the panel members altogether and replace all three of them for new talent if he still worked on the show.

Chris Isaak and Harry Connick Jr. are two other stars said to be in the running for the new series, which launches in January 2011.
