'This Life' star joins Square

Steve John Shepherd is set to play Alfie Moon’s cheeky cousin in ‘EastEnders’.

The ‘This Life’ actor is set to move into Albert Square later this year as Michael Moon, shortly after Alfie – played by Shane Richie – returns to Walford with his wife Kat Moon (Jessie Wallace) after five years away.

Describing his new role, he said: "I can vividly remember watching the first ever episode of ‘EastEnders’ and I'm very excited to be joining such a fantastic and iconic programme. Michael Moon will be an exciting character to play - on the surface he's a loveable, cheeky chappy, but underneath he has hidden depths which will be exciting to explore."

Bosses on the show are also thrilled about the actor’s arrival, and promise his comedic alter-ego will cause a “big splash” in the show as he makes friends with his new neighbours.

Executive producer Bryan Kirkwood added: "I've been a fan of Steve John Shepherd's work for years. He's a fantastic signing for ‘EastEnders’, an exciting addition to the Moon family, and is set to cause a big splash in Albert Square from the moment he arrives."

Kat and Alfie are due to return to ‘EastEnders’ in September, when the funny barman buys the Queen Vic after it is burned down.
