Film-maker and long-time Prince collaborator Spike Lee helped lead the tributes to the Purple Rain singer with an impromptu street party in his New York borough.

Around 1,000 people turned up to celebrate the life and times of the Purple Rain singer after writer and director Lee sent out an invite for people to share their grief upon news of Prince's death on Thursday.

People partied late into the night, forcing police to block off the Brooklyn street where revellers gathered.

In scenes reminiscent of the Brixton street party that marked the death of home-grown singer David Bowie in January, Prince fans wearing his signature colour purple sang songs and shared memories.

Several used the lights on their camera phones to illuminate the street as night fell on New York.
