Matthias Schoenaerts has said he can’t believe his luck at getting to work with Eddie Redmayne in The Danish Girl.
The pair are two of the stars of the upcoming film which sees Eddie play transgender painter Einar Wegener, later known as Lili Elbe.
Matthias, speaking at the gala screening of his new film Suite Francaise, said of Eddie: “He’s a unique actor – so generous and playful and devoted. It’s an honour to be able to be part of a project that he’s starring in.”

The story, which takes place in the 1920s, tells the love story between Einar and his wife Gerda Waud (Alicia Vikander), and how Gerda persuaded him to pose for her in women’s clothes. He later underwent sex reassignment surgery to become a woman.
Belgian-born actor Matthias continued: “We’re enjoying the work. We have Tom Hooper directing and Alicia Vikander [in the cast], it’s such a great thing. Sometimes I have to slap myself and be like, ‘Come on Matthias, wake up, realise what’s going on, you’re blessed’.”
Suite Francaise, which stars Matthias as a Nazi officer who falls in love with the daughter-in-law of a French woman who is forced to take him in when soldiers invade her town, is out in cinemas today.
