'Mary and Max' a true original

'Mary and Max' a true original

Director: Adam Elliot

Cast: (Voices) Tony Collette, Phillip Seymour-Hoffman, Barry

Humphries, Eric Bana

A positive delight of wit, observation, humanity, love and clever humour laced with heartbreaking pathos.

In short: a classic.

A claymation of quite stunning brilliance based on a true story in which, in the 1970s, a lonely eight-year-old girl, Mary (Collette), living in the Australian outback, picks a name out of the Manhattan 'phone book and begins a 20-year-old pen pal friendship with an obese 44-year-old Max (Seymour Hoffman).

As we follow their correspondence and growing relationship the question haunting the film is: Will they ever meet up?

This is an animation classic for adults and you shouldn't miss what is one of the truly original films in years.

Star Rating: 5/5
