Cheryl Cole's "lack of chemistry" with Paula Abdul led her to be dropped from the US version of 'The X Factor'.
The 27-year-old singer is believed to have been replaced by Nicole Scherzinger on the judging panel of the musical talent show – alongside Simon Cowell and L.A. Reid - and although her strong Newcastle accent is thought to have been one factor in her departure, another is her relationship with her fellow judge.
It has also been suggested it was a mutual decision after she began missing her home country too much and she may now return to the British version of the show.
A source told The Sun newspaper: "It hasn't worked out. She's homesick and wants to return to the UK. She's had enough.
"Whether she ends up back on UK 'X Factor' is open to speculation."
Despite the reports – which show officials have not yet officially commented on – insiders insist Cheryl has not yet been axed.
One source told Deadline.com: "Nothing is definite now. But they do know it's not working, and they're trying to figure it out."
According to the website, Fox were not pleased with the "chemistry" on the panel and think Cheryl is to blame.
The source added: "She may be Britain's sweetheart but nobody knows her here."
If Nicole takes over Cheryl's judging role, Steve Jones is expect to host the programme on his own.
