Jimmy Fallon got his hands on Donald Trump’s famous mop after inviting the presidential candidate on The Tonight Show.
Fallon was granted permission to mess up the Republican candidate’s hair – a gesture that did not go down well with viewers.
Many accused the talk show host of “normalising” Trump, treating him as he had any other celebrity guest and failing to address controversial statements the businessman-turned-politician has made – particularly around immigration laws.
Jimmy Fallon inviting Trump on is part of the normalizing of hate. Should be ashamed of himself. Lost all respect from me.— Michelangelo Signorile (@MSignorile) September 16, 2016
When you are neutral in the presence of racism and bigotry, you are part of the problem Jimmy Fallon— R Joseph (@rjoseph7777) September 16, 2016
Jimmy Fallon: Don't put Trump on TV & treat him like a buddy & muss his hair. It humanizes a monster. Stop it.— Tim O'Donnell (@TimODee16) September 16, 2016
I don't fault Jimmy Fallon for not being a journalist. I do fault him for his willingness to serve as hell's court jester.— Mark Harris (@MarkHarrisNYC) September 16, 2016
Some saw the hair-ruffle as a symptom of a wider problem.
Fallon represents our collective failure to ask for anything more than memes and click bait garbage. pic.twitter.com/1Y7CNmTUCq— bone atm (@houseofcarlyle) September 16, 2016
Jimmy Fallon is the Tonight Show host we deserve.— Matt Mira (@MattMira) September 16, 2016
People thought he wouldn’t get away with doing the same to Hillary Clinton…
@realDonaldTrump has such a great sense of humor. He just let Jimmy Fallon mess up his hair. Hillary would scream and run— Nick Marcuccio (@nickmarcuccio) September 16, 2016
If Jimmy Fallon tried to lay a finger on Hillary's hair to mess it up, he'd be suddenly and mysteriously DEAD the next day— ICE_ph#866-347-2423 (@AJerseyGirlYall) September 16, 2016
But in fact, he already did.
Some were on Fallon’s side though.
