Irish star Buckley on Variety’s ‘10 to watch’ list

Kerry star Jessie Buckley has been named one of Variety magazine’s ‘10 actors to Watch’ for 2019. Past stars included on the Hollywood ‘bible’s’ annual list include Academy award winners Mahershala Ali, Viola Davis, Lupita Nyong’o, Octavia Spencer, Melissa Leo, and Brie Larson.

Irish actors who made the list include Barry Keoghan, Eve Hewson, and Domhnall Gleeson. This year’s honourees will be feted in a special October issue of Variety, as well as at a reception at the Newport Beach Festival.

Steven Gaydos, Variety vice-president and executive editor, said one of the best aspects of the traditional fall film awards season is showcasing new acting talents.

“Since Variety’s ‘10 Actors to Watch’ began, nearly a quarter-century ago, we’ve prided ourselves on our ability to take stock of performers from virtually every corner of filmmaking and this year is no exception.

“Check out the bracing new faces who hail from awards season contenders and also from small indie films, historical dramas, major studio blockbusters, and genre fare, that ranges from daringly edgy to thrillingly entertaining.”

Jessie, 29, from Killarney, left Ireland when she was 17 to pursue an acting and singing career in London. In 2008, Jessie appeared on the BBC’s I’d Do Anything, a talent show that searched for an unknown actress to take on the role of Nancy in the West End revival of Oliver.

She has appeared on the TV adaptation of the book Shades of Love, as well as opposite Jude Law in Michael Grandage’s West End production of Henry V.

The actress was also cast as Marya Bolkonskaya in the BBC dramatisation of War and Peace and as Lorna Bow in the BBC drama series Taboo, alongside Tom Hardy. However, it is her extraordinary turn in Wild Rose, as flame-haired Scottish singer Rose-Lynn Harlan that has critics around the globe sitting up and taking the notice.

She also won praise for her role in the Emmy-nominated HBO miniseries Chernobyl, while she will next appear opposite Renee Zellweger in Judy. Other actors on the list include Maya Hawke — daughter of Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman — who appeared with Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
