Irish contestant's 'X Factor' success 'a fix', say critics

Mary Byrne's 'X Factor' success has been called a "fix" after mass voting from her Tesco colleagues.

The Irish supermarket worker has faced criticism from fans of the show after bosses at the store she works at emailed 300,000 staff members to remind them to pick up the telephone and support her.

A Tesco spokesperson told the Daily Mirror newspaper: "We are fully supportive of Mary and so are her friends and colleagues, but as to how anyone votes, that is up to them."

As well as the thousands of emails, Tesco has also aired a TV advert in Ireland, which said: "We're behind Mary."

One fan of the show said: "No other contestant has this level of support. It is unfair and unprecedented."

Meanwhile, fellow contestant Cher Lloyd, 17, reportedly broke down and collapsed to the floor after the results show on Sunday, leaving bosses fearful she will not be well enough to continue in the competition long term.

A source told the Daily Star newspaper: "It's not looking good for her. She may have an amazing voice on stage but once the bright lights are off she is a wreck. We don't know how she is going to last until Christmas."

While the contestants are finding the show stressful, judge Simon Cowell is apparently having a very relaxing time.

Before live shows, he reportedly sits in a Jacuzzi whilst eating ice cream and watching cartoons.

A source added to The Sun newspaper: "He says it's his way of relaxing. His dressing room is like a five-star hotel suite. He even watches rehearsals on a monitor from the bath."
