Green Day set for Global Icon accolade at MTV Europe Music Awards

Punk rockers Green Day are to be recognised for their contribution to music over the past two decades at this year’s MTV Europe Music Awards.

The American band will receive the Global Icon Award at a ceremony in Rotterdam on Sunday night.

A host of other awards will be handed out with Beyonce and Justin Bieber leading the way with the most nominations.

Lemonade star Beyonce and Love Yourself singer Justin have been shortlisted for five awards each, with Britain’s Adele close behind on four nominations.

Also up for multiple wins are Rihanna, Drake, Kanye West, Ariana Grande and The Weeknd who are listed in three categories each.

Beyonce is up for best US act, best video for Formation, best female, best live act and biggest fans, while Bieber has been named for best Canadian act, best song with Sorry, best male, best pop, and goes up against Beyonce in the biggest fans category.

Adele is set to give both nominee pack leaders a run for their money as she battles Bieber for best song with her track Hello, and Beyonce for best female and best live act.

In the best UK and Ireland act category, Adele faces competition from Coldplay, Little Mix, Years & Years and ex-One Direction star Zayn Malik.

The 23rd EMAs will include performances from American rock group Kings of Leon and singer-songwriter Bruno Mars as well as Green Day.

On Green Day’s prize, Bruce Gilmer, executive vice president of talent and music at Viacom – MTV’s parent company – said: “Green Day is, without question, one of the world’s most influential rock bands.

“For over two decades, they’ve introduced new generations of fans from around the globe to their impassioned lyrics and raw musical power.”
