Emotional 'Emmerdale' exit for Shadrach

'Emmerdale' layabout Shadrach Dingle clutches his stomach in agony as he makes his exit from the rural soap tonight.

The village alcoholic, played by Andy Devine, leaves the show in tear-jerking scenes after turning up drunk to his birthday party.

Viewers have seen shambling Shadrach receive strict orders from the doctor to give up drinking after developing a stomach ulcer.

In tonight’s episode, his disgusted nephew Marlon Dingle (Mark Charnock), who has been trying to help him kick the booze, hands him a four-pack of beer and throws him out.

But Emmerdale bosses are keeping details of the final twist to Shadrach’s story under wraps.

Actor Devine said: “It’s been 10 years and I’ve really enjoyed it. I love Shadrach, but I’ve always been a traveller and I’d like to be a jobbing actor again.

“I’m not ready to retire yet but it’d be nice to have some time off. I am looking forward to late mornings and sailing in the afternoon.”
