Countdown to Rory Gallagher International Festival in Donegal

It is 60 years since Irish rock-blues guitarist was born in Ballyshannon, Co Donegal and final preparations are underway ahead of the Rory Gallagher International Tribute Festival 2008 that takes place in two weeks.

Now in its seventh year, this unique four-day festival is fast becoming one of the biggest music festival’s in the country with thousands of Rory Gallagher's fans from all over the world set to make the annual pilgrimage to honour Rory in his birthplace of Ballyshannon between Thursday May 29 and Sunday June 1.

Festival chairperson Barry O’Neill said that they are looking forward to this year’s tribute and a great line-up has been assembled.

We are delighted that this year the Julian SAS Band from Holland will be one of the main headline acts, with annual favourites Sinnerboy from Manchester and the legendary Pat McManus.

Some 32 performing acts will appear coming from afar afield as Germany, Holland, Italy, USA , UK and Ireland.

Making a welcomed return are leading performers Defender from Scotland, Rikirock from Italy, The Loop from Germany, Dave McHugh Band from Dublin, Remember Rory (Germany), legendary local Rockers Boxtie and Johnny Gallagher, Moonchild (Donegal) and making a return from Devon, England are Shinkicker a band that are a "must-see to be believed" featuring the guitarist Chris Stuckey.

Two of Sligo’s favourite sons will also be rocking the streets of Ballyshannon with Seamie O'Dowd and his band, requiring no introduction to festival-goers. Seamie’s passion and awesome rawness is refreshing for many Rory fans.

Making his first appearance at the 2008 Tribute is another Sligo-man, Tabby Callaghan who exploded onto the TV screens of millions of viewers in the UK and Ireland in 2004 when he made the final of the ITV programme X-Factor. Tabby will be the first to admit the influence that Rory Gallagher has had on his music.

Making her first appearance this year will be the highly acclaimed Mirenda Rosenburg, a powerhouse singer from Washington DC. Mirenda Rosenberg and her band will entertain the Ballyshannon audience with her exciting repertoire of jazz, blues funk and soul music.

Each year the tribute festival organisers strive to link many connections with Rory Gallagher and making a welcomed return is Eamon McCormack Band, one of the last musicians to record with the G-man. Eamon McCormack has recently released his superb new Album entitled 'Kindred Spirits'.
