Britney in court over control of affairs

Britney Spears has made a surprise appearance in court, sparking speculation that she may be about to resume control of her life.

The troubled singer was made the subject of a conservatorship – a legal arrangement in which other people take control of key decisions – in February 2008 after several high-profile incidents of erratic behaviour.

She met a judge overseeing her conservatorship yesterday.

Los Angeles Superior Court judge Reva Goetz also met the singer’s father, Jamie, who has control with lawyers over his daughter’s personal and financial affairs.

Wearing a black dress and black boots, Spears was ushered into the judge’s chambers by deputies.

Judge Goetz later said in open court: “We had a very nice conversation.”

But the judge did not make any changes after the 40-minute private meeting with the 28-year-old singer.

Jamie Spears, her court-appointed guardian, also had a meeting with the judge and left without speaking to reporters.

Asked if Britney was ready to resume control of her affairs, Jamie’s lawyers made no comment.

The conservatorship was arranged after Spears was twice given involuntary psychiatric treatment following a year of strange behaviour, including the now infamous episode in which she shaved off all her hair.

Her father was given strict control over her personal life and finances and promptly sidelined her manager and helped her rebuild her relationship with her two young sons.
