Boyle album set to be year's biggest seller

Susan Boyle’s debut album, 'I Dreamed A Dream', is poised to become the biggest-selling album of 2009 – in just four weeks – the Official Charts Company said today.

The CD from the 'Britain’s Got Talent' runner-up has sold more than 1.4 million copies, rocketing it into the lead.

The top three albums of the year, from Boyle, Lady Gaga and Kings of Leon, had all shifted more than a million copies by Saturday night, but Boyle’s lead has been increasing over this week, according to the data.

Lady Gaga’s 'The Fame' has enjoyed 49 weeks of chart success, while 'Only By The Night' by Kings Of Leon has had 65 weeks.

Church worker Boylr was an unknown at the start of this year but her audition on the ITV1 talent show became an internet sensation and helped transform her into an international star.

The audition was the most-watched clip on video website YouTube this year.

The Scottish singer’s rendition of 'I Dreamed A Dream' from the musical Les Miserables on the television show was watched more than 120 million times by viewers across the world.

She now counts actress Demi Moore and her heroine, singer Elaine Page, among her fans.

Martin Talbot, managing director of the Official Charts Company, said: “In just four weeks, Susan Boyle has become the biggest album artist in the UK by some margin – an extraordinary achievement for an artist who was totally unknown until last April.

“She has clearly connected with a massive proportion of the British population and is now looking solidly in place to take the title of the biggest album of the year.”

Boyle’s album features her version of 'I Dreamed A Dream' as well as the standard 'Cry Me A River', and covers of Madonna’s 'You’ll See' and The Monkees’ 'Daydream Believer'.

In November, the record achieved the largest ever pre-order for online retailer Amazon.

It soared straight to number one in the charts, and achieved the best first week’s sale for a debut album.

Here are the top five artists and albums of the year so far and the number of weeks in the chart, according to Official Charts Company data:

1. Susan Boyle – 'I Dreamed A Dream' – 4

2. Lady Gaga – 'The Fame' – 49

3. Kings Of Leon – 'Only By The Night' – 65

4. Michael Buble – 'Crazy Love' – 9

5. Black Eyed Peas – 'The End' – 28
