Boy Better Know to collect innovation prize at NME Awards as Lorde leads the way

Grime collective Boy Better Know and Garbage frontwoman Shirley Manson will be recognised for their contributions to music at the NME Awards on Wednesday night.

Boy Better Know – founded by brothers JME and Skepta – have pioneered grime which continues to enjoy a mainstream resurgence following its initial emergence in the early 2000s.

They will receive an innovation award at the ceremony where Skepta is also scheduled to perform while Manson will be presented with an Icon prize in recognition of a career spanning more than three decades.

Pop stars Lorde and Charli XCX are the frontrunners in the main categories with four nods apiece while there is also a surprise nomination for Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn in the hero of the year shortlist.

New Rules singer Dua Lipa joins Lorde and Charli XCX in the best song category and is also included on the best British solo artist shortlist alongside Liam Gallagher, Stormzy, Ed Sheeran, Loyle Carner and Charli XCX.

Sheeran’s record-breaking third album, Divide, is a surprise omission from the best album prize which sees Lorde’s Melodrama shortlisted alongside debut albums from rappers J Hus and Loyle Carner as well as Wolf Alice’s Visions Of A Life, Humanz’ Gorillaz, and The National’s Sleep Well Beast.

J Hus also finds himself on the best new artist shortlist where he is joined by Stefflon Don, The Magic Gang, Sigrid, SZA and Shame.

One Love Manchester is up for music moment of the year alongside the Grime4Corbyn campaign which saw dozens of grime artists back the Labour leader throughout 2017.

Liam Gallagher, Alt-J Stefflon Don and Pale Waves are also set to perform at the event which takes place at the O2 Academy in Brixton.
