Galway County Council - The Results

Fianna Fáil are the dominant party in Galway County Council after all four candidates in the Tuam area were successful, with the last remaining seats on the local authority being filled after 4am this morning.

Fine Gael’s Pete Roche topped the poll in Tuam and was followed home by Fianna Fáil’s Donagh Killilea.

His Fianna Fáil colleagues Mary Hoade and Colm Keaveney retained their seats while newcomer Joe Sheridan from Milltown polled well to be the third elected in the seven seat area.

Andrew Reddington of Fine Gael was elected for the first time with party colleague Tom McHugh losing his seat by ten votes as Independent Karey McHugh claimed the final seat on Galway County Council.

Donagh Killilea paid tribute to his family and supporters after he was re-elected to Galway County Council four months after the death of his father Mark, the former Fianna Fáil Minister and MEP.

He secured 1,521 first preferences before getting the transfers to join poll-topper Pete Roche of Fine Gael in the new council.

“I suppose my dad is looking down on me tonight and he must be delighted the way the family rowed in and worked to secure this seat,” he said.

A student named in honour of former Taoiseach Albert Reynolds has been elected as the youngest member ever of Galway County Council.

Albert Dolan, a 20-year old accountancy student at NUI Galway, secured a seat in the Athenry-Oranmore area on the first count when he polled 1,720 votes.

He comes from a strong Fianna Fáil family in Monivea with his father Michael contesting the General Election in 2011 but was not elected, while his grandfather was also heavily involved in politics.

“I was in primary school when Fianna Fáil was last in power but when I went to NUIG I joined Ógra Fianna Fáil. It is a huge honour to get elected. I knocked on a lot of doors but I didn’t make any promises.”

His success, making it over the line at the first attempt just behind Independent poll-topper James Charity, has suggested a long career in politics may line ahead but he’s not looking that far ahead.

“I have five years now to prove myself so this can be the start and we will see where we go. If I can repay the faith the people of Athenry-Oranmore showed in me it will be good,” he said.

His father Michael, an accountant, said that the 20-year old did all the running himself to get elected.

“He knocked on the doors over the months and put the work in,” he said.

The young councillor’s mother Antoinette said he is a hard worker who is keen to serve.

“He’s very determined and wants to do his best for people and that’s what he has always been like,” she said.
