US consumer confidence at 17-year low

US consumer confidence in May has sunk to its lowest level since 1991.

The consumer sentiment index fell to 57.2 in May from an upwardly revised 62.8 in April.

US consumers now believe that inflation will average 7.7% over the next 12 months, another record high after the 6.8% rate expected in the April survey.
