The Unite trade union has expressed disappointment at today’s decision by the ICTU executive to support a Yes vote in the Lisbon Treaty referendum on June 12.
"This was a democratic decision and we accept that," said Unite regional secretary Jimmy Kelly after the executive meeting in Dublin today.
"It is ironic though that while we stand by democracy as a movement, it is our belief that Lisbon works against it by removing power from elected representatives and putting it in the hands of unelected judges at the European Court of Justice."
Unite will continue to advocate that its 60,000 members vote No.
"We are not opposed to Europe. What we do oppose though is a poorly drafted Treaty which threatens to undermine national workers rights agreements that have been built up over many decades."
