'Significant number' of Volkswagen owners 'considering legal action'

International lawyers say they have been approached by a "significant number" of Volkswagen owners and shareholders who are considering legal action against the company.

The German manufacturer has admitted that 11 million diesel cars were fitted with software to trick testers into thinking they were cleaner than they actually were.

Fraser Whitehead, head of business and specialist litigation at Slater and Gordon Lawyers in London, said: "Potentially, it's enormous, because it will be surprising if Volkswagen are the only people who have been doing it.

"It may not be the same artificial testing devices, but the issue of the European standard and the way that has been presented to by the cars, I think that would be very common."
