Number of new cars bought doubled in last year

The number of new cars bought last month more than doubled compared to the same time last year, according to official figures released today.

New figures from the CSO show that there was 4,683 new cars registered in September, compared to 2,272 for the same month last year.

However, the CSO pointed out that figures for September last year were the lowest since 1967.

The figures show that Renault, Toyota, Volkswagen and Ford were the most popular cars for motorists.
