Live Register figures up almost 50,000 in past year

The number of people signing on the Live Register has increased by almost 50,000 people over the past year, according to the latest CSO figures.

The statistics agency says 207,300 people were claiming unemployment benefits during May, an increase of 30% over the previous 12 months.

An extra 7,600 signed on last month alone, with the largest rise experienced in the south-east.
