Employers group IBEC has said Ireland's rejection of the Lisbon Treaty is a disappointing result for the country.
In a statement , the organisation said the treaty was always about making Europe work better so it would be stronger in the world.
Director of EU and International affairs with IBEC Brendan Butler said the result will present challenges for the Irish economy.
"We've lost over 14,000 jobs so far this year, I mean 100 people go home every day and tell their families they have lost their jobs," Mr Butler said.
"In those types of environments you need stability, security. You need friends, you don't need enemies."
