Dempsey: Trucker levies not due until 2017 at earliest

The Transport Minister has said new EU levies on road hauliers will not be imposed until 2017 at the earliest.

Noel Dempsey said he had secured a longer lead-in time for the proposals, due to the pressures facing the sector.

If adopted by the European Parliament, the 27 member states of the EU will be able to levy extra charges for the cost of air and noise pollution on heavy goods vehicles.

The measure will also help to manage congestion by allowing different charges at different periods of day.
