Cork IT turn on the power to end Imokilly’s brave challenge

Cork IT’s powerful second-half start laid the foundations for victory over Imokilly in round three of the divisions and colleges section of the Cork SHC at Riverstown last night.

Leading 0-9 to 0-7 after playing into the breeze in the first half, the introduction of Kilkenny star Colin Fennelly in the 33rd minute helped solidify CIT’s advantage.

Fennelly was held in reserve after being hit by a ball in the warm-up. He made up for lost time, however, with two points after coming on to follow Lorcan McLoughlin’s long-range free and when Aidan Walsh and McLoughlin sent over further good points, the lead was seven points by the 41st minute.

Imokilly in the first half had made life difficult. Midfielder Cian Fleming and Martin Hickey at right half-back shone for the East Cork division, who briefly led 0-3 to 0-2 following Paudge Butler’s 12th-minute point after CIT had claimed the game’s first two scores.

Two John Cronin points in two minutes near the end of the half made it 0-9 to 0-6 for CIT, though Feeney cut the gap to two at the interval. By the time they would score again, however, sub Niall Motherway in the 42nd minute, CIT had recorded those five unanswered points and Fennelly and Walsh responded to leave it 0-16 to 0-8 on 44.

Wing-back Brian Smiddy did get two frees from distance for Imokilly. But the scores continued to come for CIT, and with five minutes left the outcome was put beyond doubt as another intercounty player came off the bench, Limerick’s Tommy Quaid, to set up Michael O’Sullivan for a well-taken goal.

CIT will now play Carbery in round four.
