Slick Avondhu hold all the aces

Avondhu got the better of Muskerry in the Cork County SHC(Divisions/Colleges section) first round at Cloughduv last night.

As a result the north Cork division advance to the third round of the championship while Muskerry will have one more chance to extend their campaign against Cork IT in round two.

Avondhu, as well as having the greater scoring power, were also defensively strong, limiting their opponents to 1-4 from play. While they trailed 1-4 to 0-3 after the opening quarter – the Muskerry goal coming from corner forward Mark Cremin – they were thankful to the accuracy of their number 11 Peter O’Brien, whose first-half tally of six points contributed to a narrow, but deserved, 0-10 to 1-6 half time lead.

In fact, Avondhu should have been further ahead after hitting six wides to their opponents two.

Muskerry resumed with a number of positional changes as well as the introduction of Noel Galvin and while they levelled the match with a Cremin free, Avondhu, with Barry Coleman and Eoin Dillon solid in the backline, regained the advantage through white flags from O’Brien, Mark O’Connor and Adrian Mannix.

In front 0-15 to 1-9, the crucial score for the north Cork side came from the stick of Denis Hayes on 44 minutes when the attacker rattled the net, benefiting from a huge Stephen Fox clearance.

O’Mahony and Cremin reduced the gap for Muskerry to a dangerous three points in the closing five minutes. However, Avondhu stood firm and the insurance scores came from a pair of long distance pointed frees in the 61st and 62nd minute from the relentless O’Brien.
