DEFENDING All-Ireland junior football champions Sligo retained their provincial title in dramatic fashion in Charlestown.
A late point from goalscorer Gary Gaughan and six points from man of the match Vincent Frizzell proved crucial as Kevin Walsh’s side held off a determined rally from Mayo.
The winners completely dominated the first 20 minutes and led by 1-5 to 0-2.
However, a goal from Darren Coen, allied to points from former Mayo senior Michael Conroy, Simon Cloherty and Alan Egan hauled Mayo back into it.
Sligo failed to score for 23 minutes in the second half but Gaughan’s late score made all the difference.
