THE versatile The Fonze can land the nap in the J P McManus Hurdle at Cork this afternoon.
The last time the selection performed over flights was two runs back at Limerick, where he stayed on in fine style to beat Final Day by a length and a quarter. Eoin Doyle, who has his charges in good shape, then ran him under top weight in the Galway Plate last Wednesday.
The Fonze emerged with reputation enhanced, producing a career-best effort to finish a creditable fourth behind Finger Onthe Pulse. Hopefully, that hard race will not have left its mark and the nine-year-old can continue what has been an excellent campaign.
The rather disappointing Liss Na Tintri, a more than useful mare at her best, is given one last chance in the Mallow Hurdle.
She made little show behind Killogan Lass at Wexford, but gets a generous weight allowance now and stepping up to three miles for the first time could hold the key.
At Naas, Dermot Weld’s Rock Critic is difficult to oppose in the Derrinstown Stud Apprentice Series Handicap. He won by eight lengths at Galway and reappears under a mandatory 5lbs penalty. Rock Critic goes up 20lbs in the future.
Weld can complete a double with Truth Seeking, third behind Prince Jock and So Secret on her debut at Fairyhouse, in the Irish Stallion Farms’ EBF Fillies Maiden.
So Secret, a length in front of the selection then, renews rivalry and has since finished fifth to Treasure The Cross at Wexford. She lost all chance when badly hampered over two furlongs out, but Truth Seeking may have more scope for improvement!
