UL-Bohemian 29 Dublin University 17
By Charlie Mulqueen
UL-BOHEMIAN moved up to sixth place in the AIB League Division One table after yesterday’s convincing victory over Dublin University at Thomond Park.
They overcame some anxious moments in the second half, having previously looked to have the game in safe keeping, to strike for a fourth try and a bonus point.
With Ryan and Anthony Hartigan in great form up front and half-backs Chris Delooze and Fergal Lawlor using possession fruitfully, they were much the stronger side in the opening stages and went ahead as early as the third minute when centre Ben Martin took advantage of paper-thin tackling to get over in the corner for a try that he converted himself. A Martin penalty shortly afterwards stretched the advantage to 10 and on 25 minutes Martin knocked a superb kick-pass into the arms of left winger Mark Butler and he cut inside a defender to go over for a lovely try that Martin converted.
The game had all the appearance of a rout when winger Martin McPhail scored the third Bohemian try on 34 minutes, but the students were boosted by a try on the stroke of half time by Mark Warburton.
Even though still 22-5 in arrears at the break, it set them in a good frame of mind for the second half, which they opened brightly with a try by number eight Martin Garvey following a well rehearsed line-out move also involving Warburton.
UL-Bohs were further stretched on 58 minutes when John Ed O’Connor was dispatched to the sin bin and almost immediately hooker Matt Crockett went over for Trinity’s third try, again after a line-out. When Mark O’Neill converted, only five points separated the sides. Dublin University came again to lay siege to the Bohs line but the defence held firm and it was just after the siege was lifted that scrum-half Delooze took a quick line-out throw that saw Fergal Lawlor break clear up-field and some smart passing led to a try for Mark Butler that Martin converted.
