Bargain Victorian period home comes with 14 acres and gate lodge

A PERIOD West Cork Victorian home, fully renovated, on 14 acres of private land plus gate lodge, for under €1 million? Surely some mistake?

The Glebe House at rural hinterland Caheragh village is all of this and more, and can be bought for around its guide of €900,000 through Skibbereen agent Charles P McCarthy.

The only thing it doesn't have is a sea view, and if it did, well, you could profitably double or treble the asking price.

Just over an hour from Cork city and airport, Caheragh is mid-way between the affluent West Cork towns of Skibbereen, Bantry and Drimoleague, say a 10 minute drive to each and while professionals in all of those settings might like the look of the Glebe, they may now have to do bidding battle with those prepared to relocate from further afield. A decentralising civil servant from Dublin, perhaps moving to West Cork, could sell a half-decent southside semi in the capital and pick up the Glebe and pocket some loose change in return for the half hour drive to Clonakilty.

The vendors are Swiss, and have been here for 12 years, during which time they effectively saved the house from a fate of abandonment.

It hadn't been lived in for some time when they bought it, and they had to chop down overgrowth to get access to the house from the drive and entrance to begin resuscitation.

And, while the house is fully done over, the diminutive stone lodge by the entrance gates, with its latticed windows, is a bite-sized renovation task for new owners and has already been re-slated to keep the weather at bay.

The grounds are private, with mature trees and old pines, there are paddocks and wooded bowers, and there are some courtyard outbuildings suitable for stabling and improving.
