A CLOSURE now of the country’s last remaining sugar factory in Mallow would have serious social consequences for the area, it was claimed yesterday.
John McDonnell, Mallow Development Partnership chairman, said the area has already suffered rationalisation at Dairygold and the upcoming closure of Nestlé in Mallow.
He said on economic grounds, a case can be made for continued sugar processing, citing positive statements from the company and Agriculture Minister Mary Coughlan.
"There is an onus on the IFA to represent all its members, including those growers who wish to continue in production, at least in the short term," he said.
