London tower fire kills two children

TWO children, including a three-week-old baby and a seven-year-old, died last night after a fire ripped through a south London tower block.

More than 100 firefighters tackled the blaze at the 12-storey block of flats in Camberwell. The firestarted at 3.30pm.

A spokesman for the ambulance service said that 13 people, including the two children who died, had been taken to hospital and three were in a serious condition.

Most were being treated for smoke inhalation.

About 30 people in total were rescued from the block.

London Fire Brigade said the blaze had been bought under control and fire investigation teams were quickly on the scene.

A fire brigade statement said: “The fire is believed to have started on the fourth floor and to have spread rapidly to the 11th floor.

“A number of rescues have been carried out in extremely difficult circumstances.”
