County manager denies rumours of main landfill closure
By Donal Hickey - Monday, June 25, 2012Persistent rumours that Kerry’s main landfill, outside Tralee, is to close have been denied by Tom Curran, the county manager.
He said there was no basis to such rumours and that a report would first be brought before Kerry County Council if the landfill were to close. An €8m extension to the landfill, at Muingnaminnane in the Stacks Mountains, was completed in 2010.
Mr Curran has already told the council there will be a "significant reduction" in the quantity of waste entering landfill in the coming years because of further cuts in the amount of organic waste that can be accepted.
Also, competition from landfills outside Kerry meant that private operators were moving large amounts of waste out of the county, he said.
Waste collection in Kerry was privatised earlier this year, which has fuelled speculation about the future of the council-owned landfill.
Meanwhile, a senior council manager has strongly denied a suggestion that plastic bottle banks were removed as part of a deal with a private contractor who has recently taken over waste collection in the county.
Fianna Fáil councillor Paul O’Donoghue claimed the removal of such facilities around Kerry coincided with the transfer of waste collection to the contractor.
However Oliver Ring, director of environmental services, gave an "absolutely categorical assurance" that no deal had been done with the private company.
Most of the plastic bottle banks had been previously removed, he said.
Mr O’Donoghue said there was a lot of opposition in Kerry to council management’s decision to remove plastic bottle banks. As well as increasing costs to householders, it had also led to a rise in indiscriminate dumping and was inconveniencing older people, he said. "The reason given for removing the plastic bottle banks in the first place was that indiscriminate dumping was taking place next to them, but I don’t agree that was the case," he said.
