Lismore offers colleges €3k prize to develop brand logo

One of Ireland’s best-known heritage towns has offered a cash prize to encourage Irish colleges to develop a brand logo and a marketing strategy to promote it.

Lismore, in Co Waterford, is offering a prize of €3,000 to the college whose submission is selected.

The money will be allocated between the successful college and its students in a ratio yet to be decided.

The logo will become a marketing tool and a commercial property with a price tag for it usage.

"We would expect the entrants to contribute suggestions on the logo’s marketing potential along with the design," says Mealla Fahey.

The idea arose when local commerce, tourism and culture organisations decided to form a unified front to promote the town, according to Ms Fahey, project manager at Lismore Heritage Centre.

"We see towns like Youghal, Kinsale and Cashel with logos that reflect their heritage and we want Lismore to have that also.

"Colleges by their nature are innovative and have recourse to top technology and methodology which makes them ideally placed to adopt such a live project. Besides the chance to win €3,000, they can use the experience to boost their CVs," she said.

Lismore Castle, Lismore Hotel and the town’s heritage centre have agreed to provide the prize money.

Development company Lismore Mochuda and the Tidy Towns committee will also provide expertise and guidance, while some smaller enterprises have agreed to contribute through advice and fundraising initiatives.

The project will form part of the colleges’ autumn curriculum and they may submit as many entries as they wish. CIT and WIT have already committed to the project. Similar institutes in Limerick and Athlone are set to decide within days, as is Dun Laoghaire College of Art and Design.
