World Cup boost as Duff shows no sign of stopping

Damien Duff will today be named in Giovanni Trapattoni’s squad for the World Cup qualifier against Kazakhstan next month, confirming the veteran winger’s commitment to extending his international career.

Duff captained the Irish team when earning his 100th cap against Italy at the European Championship finals this summer but ambiguous remarks he made at the time appeared to leave his future in the green shirt up in the air.

However, it is understood that Duff has made clear to Trapattoni his desire to continue to make himself available for his country, something which will have come as music to the ears of the manager who has often spoken of the winger’s huge value to the team in terms of both ability and experience. Proving his fitness is not an issue either, the 33-year-old hit the ground running at club level last Saturday when he scored Fulham’s first goal of the new season in a 5-0 thrashing of Norwich.

There has also been growing speculation over the last number of days that Robbie Keane will sign on for the new campaign, although it will be this afternoon before Trapattoni should at last be in a position to clarify the skipper’s situation when the manager holds a press conference in Dublin at which he will name his squad for the opening game in Astana on September 7 and the friendly against Oman at Craven Cottage four days later.

With Shay Given having already retired, Trapattoni will be hoping that another of his senior players, Richard Dunne, will continue to answer his country’s call, despite a change of club being in the offing for the centre-half. Dunne, of course, is already ruled out of the Kazakhstan match with a groin problem but now the revelation that he is expected to leave Aston Villa for Stoke City is bound to raise fresh questions about his international intentions, given the additional demands involved in committing to a new club.

There is unexpectedly encouraging news on the injury front regarding Dunne’s centre-half partner Sean St Ledger. The defender had been all but ruled out of the Kazakhstan game with a knee injury but his recovery is ahead of schedule and he has already returned to training at Leicester City.

“So I’m back,” he tweeted yesterday. “Trained properly today with first team…then boxing session…bit of a demon with gloves on.”

By contrast, Leeds midfielder Paul Green has suffered a knock-out blow and is definitely out of the Kazakhstan tie after a scan put his recovery period from a knee injury at between four to eight weeks.

Leeds manager Neil Warnock revealed the injury may not be as bad as first feared: “It’s looking like a grade two strain or a tear,” said Warnock. “We’re hoping four or six weeks, but it could be eight weeks.”

Meanwhile, transfer speculation involving two Irish strikers — and also two former Cork City players — has Wolves’ Kevin Doyle being linked with a move to Everton and West Brom’s Shane Long reportedly in the sights of Tottenham Hotspur.

However, West Brom manager Steve Clarke is clearly intent on retaining the services of his striker, praising him highly for his performance in Saturday’s 3-0 win over Liverpool.

“I thought Shane was fantastic in the game,” said Clarke. “I thought he was always in and around the ankles of the two centre-halves. He gave them a real uncomfortable afternoon and that is what Shane can do.

“He came here with a lot of expectation on his shoulders, he was a big signing for the club. They paid a lot of money for him and he had an interrupted season with injury and it did not go quite the way Shay wanted. He is a man that has got something to prove and he showed some of that last week.”

Clarke also referred to the dispute between Long and Trapattoni over the player’s fitness for the recent friendly in Belgrade.

“It didn’t seem like the criticism affected him,” Clarke remarked. “We had a brief chat about it and in his mind he was fit to play and Mr Trapattoni chose not to pick him and it was good for us because it meant Shane came back fresh. He has been fine. He’s trained every day since he came back from international duty.”
