Purcell keeps Cork rolling on

Cork City continued their climb up the Premier Division table with a convincing victory over an outclassed Bray Wanderers in a one-sided encounter at the Carlisle Grounds last night.

Tommy Dunne’s side had the perfect start when a cross from winger Daryl Horgan on the left after just four minutes was headed home by unmarked striker Tadhg Purcell from eight yards, giving keeper Darren Quigley no chance.

Bray did have an opportunity to draw level five minutes later when Cork defender Danny Murphy was shown the yellow card for a foul on Marty Waters. However, the resulting free by Kevin Knight was confidently grabbed by keeper Mark McNulty.

Waters then opened up the visitors’ defence on 27 minutes when supplying a perfect through ball to Sean Houston. But his effort from 15 yards was brilliantly pushed out by the alert McNulty.

Cork went close to stretching their lead when first a corner on the right by Gearóid Morrissey allowed Purcell to get in a header but it was saved by Quigley. Then Daryl Horgan thumped a long-range effort narrowly wide of the target.

All that pressure was bound to tell and Cork deservedly had a second goal on 34 minutes when a Colin Healy cross from the right was side-footed home from close range by the unmarked Shane Duggan.

Waters went close to pulling a goal back for Bray three minutes before the interval when he picked up a loose ball at the edge of the box and let fly from 16 yards, only for McNulty to make another comfortable save.

In added time of the first half Jason Byrne fired another free-kick well over.

Purcell again went close for Cork on 49 minutes when firing just over the bar from the edge of the box after Horgan had created the chance on the left.

Bray threw everything forward to get back into the game but the closest they came to breaking their duck was when a Dean Zambra free on the right was headed into the arms of McNulty by Sean Houston.

The match was all over as a contest on 65 minutes when Purcell and Duggan combined nicely through the middle to set up a chance Vinny Sullivan.

The striker easily rounded Quigley to plant the ball into the empty net.

Substitute Stephen Kenny almost set up a fourth goal for Cork late on when he laid on a chance for Morrissey on the right, only for the latter to see his effort blocked by Quigley.

The match ended in controversy when Kenny was sent off for a second yellow card offence after a foul on Quigley.
