Meyler salutes parents for instilling ‘books before boots’ philosophy

Republic of Ireland international midfielder David Meyler has revealed his career could have taken a different path but for his parents.

Meyler, 23, was offered a trial by Nottingham Forest at 16 but his parents wanted him to continue his education and so he stayed with Cork City.

The move paid off as Meyler was picked up by Sunderland three years later and while injuries restricted his impact at the Stadium of Light, he is now playing a key role in Hull’s promotion bid.
