Manchester City stars to take centre stage at Thomond Park

A sell-out crowd is expected at Thomond Park when Premier League champions Manchester City take on Limerick FC in a friendly on August 5 (7pm).

Irish football fans can expect to see Carlos Tevez, Mario Balotelli, David Silva and the rest of City’s superstars at the home of Munster Rugby after City promised to send a first team squad to face the Airtricity League Division One outfit. Thomond Park stadium director John Cantwell said he expects all 26,000 tickets — priced at €30 for premier, €15 for terrace and €10 for schoolchildren — to sell out.

“This will be a wonderful opportunity for people to support a unique football event and enjoy a galaxy of superstars in action,” he added.

“The fact that it will take place on the Sunday evening of a holiday weekend will enable fans to travel from all over the country to see the game and stay over after.”

Limerick FC chairman Pat O’Sullivan said the fixture would be worth up to €10 million to the city, adding: “This is an example of soccer and rugby working openly to bring a massive sporting, social and economic benefit to Limerick.

“We are a non profit-making club and the proceeds will be invested in youth and educational projects in Limerick.”

He also revealed the club have been given the go-ahead for the gameby the FAI as a result of mediation, which will also see Limerick FC hosting a major game in each of the next eight years.

“This game also solidifies Thomond Park as a major soccer venue and I hope the local businesses and wider community give their full backing to this major event in view of our status as a city of sport and culture,” added O’Sullivan.
