Limerick stay top

Limerick remain top of the Airtricity League First Division thanks to an 86th minute strike from Rory Gaffney last night that saw off Athlone Town.

The league leaders enjoyed the lion's share of possession and will have been disappointed that they didn't lead by half time. However as time expired, the home side began to improve and could easily have snatched all three points.

Jason Hughes had a shot saved by Dave Ryan, causing Limerick to frantically clear their lines. Stephen Last misjudged the long clearance and failed to make a clean contact, allowing Gaffney to take the ball down with one touch and drive it home with his second.

ATHLONE TOWN: P Jennings; N Harney (J Hughes), J Woods, S Last, K Williamson; M Walsh; N Scullion, S Dunne, B Gill (S Skelly), E Monaghan (M Sherlock); M McGoldrick.

LIMERICK FC: D Ryan; S Kelly, P Purcell, R Kluciar, S Tracy; G Sheahan (J McGrath), J Judge, S McGann, S Brosnan (G Coughlan); D Behan (D Foley), R Gaffney.
