Fireworks in store as leaders host Drogs

Airtricity League Premier Division leaders Sligo Rovers face one of their toughest tests of the season this evening when they host second-placed Drogheda United at the Showgrounds (7.45pm).

Mick Cooke’s United know a victory would put them top and extend an astonishing run of form which has seen the league’s surprise package win their last six league games.

“We all know what’s at stake, both sides do, so we won’t be going there expecting anything less than a tough match,” said Cooke.

“But we won’t be going there with any fear. Sligo are highly experienced but my lads relish playing in front of big crowds and we expect the Showgrounds to be jumping.”

Rovers will be without Danny Ventre because of suspension while Danny North is out for the season due to a cruciate injury.

“These are the games you want to be involved in,” said Ian Baraclough. “We know that if we keep on winning, then we will have no concerns about what other teams do. Drogheda are on a great run, Mick Cooke has done a marvellous job and they will come here with thoughts of coming away with three points.

“It is up to us to cope with that and it’ll be tough but we’ve prepared very well this week and we’re looking forward to the challenge.”

In the First Division, Mervue United will look to secure a third win in a row when they host third-placed Waterford at Fahy’s Field (7.30pm). The Blues seven-game winning streak was halted by a draw with Finn Harps last week.
